India won the first cricket Test against England by nine wickets at Motera in Ahmedabad on Monday to take the lead in the four-match series. England made 191 in the first innings while India declared at 521 for eight in their first knock. Virender Sehwag (25) and Cheteswar Pujara (41 not out) helped India chase down the 77-run target in 15.3 overs. Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 11. India needed just 77 runs to win in their second innings. England were all out for 406 in their second innings at lunch on the fifth and final day of the first cricket Test. Alastair Cook top-scored with 176 while Matt Prior made 91. Pragyan Ojha took four wickets for India in the second innings while Umesh Yadav struck thrice. They were batting after India gave them a follow-on. In their first innings, they were all out for 191 runs. India, who won the toss and elected to bat first in the match, declared its first innings at 521/8. Cheteshwar Pujara scored a brilliant double century off 374 balls in 6th Test match of his career. The 24-year-old Rajkot-born batsman piled on England's misery as he guided India to reach 502 for six at tea after having batted for a marathon period of almost eight hours. He became the sixth Indian batsman to hit a double century against England after Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Gundappa Viswanath, Vinod Kambli and Rahul Dravid. Cheteshwar Pujara stood out for the Indian side, joining a select band of 18 other countrymen to score a double century in Test cricket. Pujara's double century is the first by an Indian in nearly two years. Sachin Tendulkar's 214 versus Australia at Bangalore in October 2010 was the last occasion when an Indian batsman had made a double hundred in Test cricket.
